Please note: if you have already attended an IATE course, you don't need to attend another taster day.
Please request an application form from the office, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and complete this for the course of your choice. You may be asked to attend a 1:1 interview (free of charge).

Feedback and duty of care:

Where an application is unsuccessful, we regret that we do not give feedback. Sometimes applicants are asked to undergo personal therapy and reapply.  As part of our duty of care, there are also occasions where we reserve the right to gain from applicants and students a medical and/or psychiatric report prior to attending the taster day or on the training itself,  before continuing on the training,   This is due to the nature of therapy training programmes and interviews which can be  emotionally challenging for some people.

Second interviews may be organised for one or more of the following reasons:

  1. To ensure that the training is not going to be too stressful for an applicant
  2. To ensure the training does not trigger a harmful reaction to an existing or past condition
  3. As a further opportunity to extend the application process when it is felt that we need to get a better sense of the applicant
  4. To ensure that the training is going to meet the applicant’s professional needs.

Applicants should not be alarmed if they are asked to attend to a second interview as this is standard practice within our organisation.

Personal therapy

All of our counselling and psychotherapy training programmes require students to attend weekly therapy from the beginning of their chosen training. This is standard practice in the profession.

pdfCode of Relational Transactions

Unsuccessful application without second interview

This is usually due to insufficient evidence of the ability to relate in ways commensurate with the values of the profession and our institution (see IATE’s Code of Relational Transactions).  The decision is final and not open to discussion. We do not offer detailed feedback.

That said, if you are willing to engage in ongoing psychotherapy to process personal history of adverse relational experiences, then you are most welcome to reapply in a year. Verification with therapist letter, detailing dates attended, is required.

Personal readiness

Should an applicant be accepted on to a training  and then prior to starting that training, act in a way that gives admissions staff a personal readiness concern, IATE has the right to withdraw the offer and/or to re-interview.
